Cornicione : a soft volume

Cornicione : a soft volume
Cornicione refers to the raised outer edge of a Neapolitan pizza.
Exposed to the intense heat of the wood-fired oven, the dough slowly expands, creating a crisp exterior while retaining layers of air within.
More than just the crust, it becomes a defining element that shapes the texture, warmth, and overall balance of the pizza.
This project begins by translating the structural and tactile qualities of the cornicione into a spatial language.
Rather than forming a rigid and clearly defined enclosure, the space is conceived as a soft, expanding volume.
Curved masses are inserted within a linear architectural framework, while the boundaries between walls, ceilings, and furniture are seamlessly connected to create a spatial experience that gently embraces the user.
The central mass operates not only as a functional element, but as the spatial core that generates density and atmosphere.
Much like the heat radiating outward from a wood-fired oven, circulation and visual flow naturally expand from the center toward the perimeter, forming a continuous spatial sequence.
The repetition of compression and release within the circulation enhances the perception of depth and slows the rhythm of time within the space.
Just as the cornicione embraces diverse toppings and ingredients to complete a balanced pizza, the space accommodates human movement, behavior, and individual design elements within a cohesive environment. Variations in seating height, distances between tables, material textures, and the density of light are not perceived as isolated components, but as layers within a unified spatial landscape. The movement and presence of users continuously reshape the atmosphere, allowing the space to evolve through time and interaction.
Materiality is approached through the authenticity of texture rather than decorative expression.
Rough plaster finishes and stone surfaces recall the raw character of the oven, while warm wood tones and muted materials establish a calm and grounded atmosphere. Instead of strong contrasts, materials are layered in subtle tonal densities, creating a restrained yet tactile sense of tension.
Lighting is designed not to uniformly illuminate the interior, but to reveal the depth of surfaces and the movement of air within the space.
Diffused indirect lighting softly emphasizes the shadows of curved forms, leaving a subtle sense of warmth across the materials. Like the air-filled structure of rising dough, this radiant lightness creates an ethereal atmosphere, allowing the entire space to be perceived as one soft and cohesive volume.
More than simply a restaurant, this space becomes a sensory landscape where heat, air, material, and human interaction gradually accumulate over time.
Just as the cornicione holds together every element of a pizza in harmony, the space exists as a warm volume that naturally embraces relationships, movement, and shared experiences.
