'시간과 머묾의 공간'

경성장어는 근대화가 본격적으로 시작되던 1945년 경성의 도시적 풍경과 건축적 질서로부터 출발한다.

당시의 건축은 전통과 근대, 동양과 서양의 감각이 혼재하던 과도기적 시대 속에서 새로운 공간 언어를 형성하고 있었으며, 

본 프로젝트는 그 시대가 지녔던 구조적 미감과 시간의 정서를 현대적으로 재해석하는 방식에 집중했다.

특히 모티브가 된 옛 경성역은 단순한 역사적 건축물이 아닌, 수많은 이동과 체류가 교차하던 도시의 상징적 장소였다.사람들은 그 공간을 지나며 시간을 축적했고, 공간은 흐름 속에서도 묵직한 정서와 질서를 유지하고 있었다. 

경성장어는 이러한 ‘시간의 밀도’를 오늘의 공간 안에서 다시 구축하고자 했다.

입구를 지나 내부로 들어서면 반복되는 아치 구조와 깊이감 있는 재료의 흐름이 자연스럽게 시선을 안쪽으로 이끈다.

이는 옛 경성역 대합실에서 보여지던 근대 건축 특유의 구조적 질서를 현대적인 비례로 재해석한 장치로, 단순한 장식적 형태가 아닌 공간 전체의 리듬과 흐름을 구성하는 핵심적인 건축 언어로 작동한다.

공간은 전체적으로 깊이감 있는 브라운 계열의 톤을 중심으로 전개된다.무게감 있는 월넛 텍스처와 어둡게 눌러앉은 마감, 은은한 금속 디테일은 근대 건축 특유의 중후한 분위기를 형성하며, 시간이 축적될수록 더욱 깊어지는 재료의 물성을 드러낸다. 

이는 단순한 장식적 요소가 아닌, 공간의 시간을 시각적으로 체감하게 만드는 장치로 작동한다.

여기에 옛 경성역 내부에서 보여지던 버건디와 딥그린 계열의 색채를 포인트 컬러로 적용하여 공간의 인상을 보다 풍부하게 구성했다.짙은 브라운 톤 위로 더해진 버건디 컬러는 근대 공간 특유의 고전적 긴장감을 형성하고, 딥그린 계열의 요소들은 당시 건축에서 나타나던 이국적인 분위기와 장식적 감각을 현대적인 방식으로 환기시킨다.​

이는 공간 전체의 무게감 속에서 시각적인 깊이와 밀도를 만들어내는 중요한 요소로 작용한다.

반복적으로 이어지는 아치 구조는 공간 사이에 자연스러운 경계를 형성하면서도, 각각의 좌석과 영역을 하나의 흐름 안에서 연결한다.넓은 간격으로 배치된 좌석은 독립적인 체류감을 유지하도록 계획되었으며, 사용자는 공간 안에서 빠르게 소비되는 식사의 분위기보다 천천히 머무르는 경험을 자연스럽게 체감하게 된다.

조명 또한 공간의 분위기를 구성하는 중요한 요소로 작용한다.

직접적인 밝기보다 낮은 색온도의 간접 조명을 중심으로 계획하여, 빛이 공간 전체를 균일하게 드러내기보다 재료의 표면과 그림자를 천천히 드러내도록 유도했다. 

어둠과 빛의 밀도 차는 공간 안에 보다 깊은 체류감을 형성하며, 사용자가 시간의 흐름을 느리게 인식하도록 만든다.

음식이 완성되어 전달되는 주방 공간은 경성역 플랫폼의 기능적 구조와 인더스트리얼한 분위기에서 모티브를 가져왔다.

금속의 질감과 직선적인 프레임 구성, 노출된 디테일들은 플랫폼이 지녔던 구조적 긴장감과 산업적 분위기를 현대적으로 재해석한 요소들이다. 이는 단순한 조리 공간의 역할을 넘어, 공간 전체의 흐름 안에서 또 하나의 장면처럼 작동하도록 의도되었다.

경성장어는 특정 시대의 양식을 표면적으로 재현하는 프로젝트가 아니다.우리가 주목한 것은 근대 건축이 지녔던 장식 이전의 태도, 그리고 그 안에 존재하던 시간의 호흡이다.

빠르게 소비되는 도시의 감각 속에서,이 공간은 잠시 속도를 늦추고 머무름의 가치를 다시 체감하게 만드는 장소로 존재한다.

시간과 머묾의 공간, 경성장어.

Gyeongseong Unagi begins from the urban landscape and architectural order of Gyeongseong in 1945, a period when modernization had just begun to take shape.

Architecture of that era existed within a transitional moment where tradition and modernity, East and West, coexisted to form a new spatial language. 

This project focuses on reinterpreting the structural aesthetics and emotional weight of that time through a contemporary perspective.

The former Gyeongseong Station, which served as the primary motif for the project, was more than a historical structure.

It was a symbolic urban destination where countless moments of movement and pause intersected. 

People accumulated time as they passed through the space, while the architecture itself maintained a quiet sense of order and permanence amidst constant flow.

Gyeongseong Unagi seeks to reconstruct this “density of time” within a modern spatial experience.

As visitors enter the space, a sequence of repeating arches and layered materiality naturally guides the eye deeper into the interior.

These architectural elements reinterpret the structural order found in the grand waiting hall of old Gyeongseong Station through contemporary proportions and detailing. Rather than functioning as decorative motifs, the arches become a core architectural language that shapes rhythm, depth, and movement throughout the space.

The overall atmosphere is built upon deep brown tones and richly layered textures.

Heavy walnut finishes, subdued surfaces, and subtle metallic details create the dignified ambiance characteristic of early modern architecture, revealing the material richness that deepens over time. These elements are not merely decorative, but devices that allow visitors to visually experience the passage and accumulation of time within the space.

To further enrich the atmosphere, burgundy and deep green tones inspired by the original interiors of Gyeongseong Station are used as accent colors throughout the project.The burgundy tones introduce a sense of classical tension and elegance, while the deep green elements evoke the exotic and ornamental sensibilities often found in architecture of the period. Layered upon the restrained brown palette, these colors add visual depth and density to the overall spatial composition.

The repeating arches create natural boundaries between areas while maintaining a continuous spatial flow.

Tables are arranged with generous spacing to preserve a sense of privacy and comfort, encouraging visitors to linger rather than simply dine. The circulation within the space is designed not as a direct or functional movement, but as a slower and more immersive spatial experience.

Lighting also plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere.

Instead of relying on bright direct illumination, the space is composed primarily with low color-temperature indirect lighting. Light gently reveals the textures and shadows of materials rather than uniformly exposing the entire interior, allowing darkness and illumination to coexist with subtle contrast.

This layered density of light slows the perception of time and deepens the sense of stay within the space.

In particular, the kitchen area — where food is prepared and presented — draws inspiration from the industrial atmosphere and structural functionality of the station platform itself.

Metal textures, linear framing, and exposed details reinterpret the industrial character and structural tension of the railway platform in a contemporary way.

More than a purely functional cooking space, the kitchen is designed as another visual scene within the overall spatial narrative.

Gyeongseong Unagi is not a project that simply recreates the aesthetics of a specific era.What we focused on was the attitude embedded within early modern architecture — the quiet rhythm of time and the emotional sense of permanence contained within it.

Amid the rapidly consumed pace of the modern city,this space exists as a place where visitors can slow down, pause, and rediscover the value of lingering.
